Clocks Fall Back for Fall Sports

There's a particular moment every fall sports parent recognizes. The one where "evening practice" starts happening in something closer to actual darkness. Daylight saving time ends, the sun clocks out an hour earlier, and the games keep going exactly on schedule, because of course they do. The season doesn't care what the clocks say, it just asks parents to be a little more prepared for the second half of it, and most figure that out somewhere around the second cold game in a row.

One sideline parent was thinking about this recently on a particularly cold bleacher, half-watching a game that was hard to see and half-reading a book a fellow parent had passed along. It's called Changing the Game: The Parent's Guide to Raising Happy, High-Performing Athletes and Giving Youth Sports Back to Our Kids, by former professional soccer player and youth coach John O'Sullivan (Morgan James Publishing, 2014). In it, O'Sullivan argues that a parent at a game can really only occupy one role at a time: Coach, Official, or Fan, and that most families get more out of youth sports, and enjoy them more, when they pick Fan and stay there. As he puts it, the job comes down to supporting a child unconditionally and simply being present, cheering, watching, and saving the game analysis for someone else. It's good advice for the sideline. It's also, weirdly enough, not bad advice for handling a season that keeps getting darker and colder without really asking anyone's permission.

The upside of just being the fan is there's a little more bandwidth left to actually enjoy the game, and that's really where a few new arrivals come in. None of them change what the clocks are doing. They just make the second half of the season a bit easier to show up for.

MegaPod® in Slate Blue, WeatherPod's 2-4 person pop-up pod, is probably the one most sidelines already know. It pops open in seconds, fits the whole family, and keeps everyone up to 35° warmer inside than out. New this season, it comes in Slate Blue, a calm, steady color for the parent who's done competing for Best Sideline Setup and just wants to be comfortable through to the final whistle.

Pair it with the Holiday Bundle, also new: get a MegaPod® and the detachable roof and a set of warm white string lights come with it, free, which works out to a $44.98 savings. It's built for this exact stretch of the calendar, when the wind picks up once the sun dips low and a lit-up pod becomes, somehow, the warmest and brightest corner of the whole field.

Then there's the new and improved Wagon Cover, which solves a problem every sideline parent has, even the ones who haven't quite named it yet. You know the one, the wagon leaves the car with "just the chairs" and somehow comes back with four jackets, a stray cleat, and half a bag of orange slices nobody will claim. The cover keeps it all together and dry, so the walk back to the car at the end of a dark, cold game stays a walk. Not a search party.

None of this changes the fact that the sun sets earlier now, or that there's a few more cold, dark games left before the season wraps up. But between O'Sullivan's advice to just be the fan, and a pod, a roof, and a set of lights built for exactly this part of the year, there's less standing between parents and actually enjoying the game. Which, in the end, is sort of the whole point of showing up.

FAQs

When do clocks fall back this year, and does it actually affect game schedules? Clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Game and practice schedules don't change, but with sunset now arriving about an hour earlier, more late-afternoon and evening games end up finishing in low light or full darkness.

What comes with the Holiday Bundle? The Holiday Bundle includes a MegaPod®, a detachable roof, and a set of warm white string lights, bundled together for a $44.98 savings compared to buying each separately.

Is the Wagon Cover a new product or an update to an existing one? It's a new and improved version, built to keep gear, snacks, and extra layers together and dry while in transit between the car and the field.

Does the MegaPod® come in other colors besides Slate Blue? Yes. Slate Blue is a new addition for this season alongside WeatherPod's existing color and clear options for the MegaPod® line.
